About The Pittsburgh Project:
The Pittsburgh Project is a nonprofit community development organization with a 23-year track record of developing leaders and serving the city’s most vulnerable residents.  Our year-round staff of 60 operates a progressive series of summer and afterschool programs for urban young people, deploys over 2500 people annually to perform free home repairs for Pittsburgh’s in-need elderly homeowners, outfits college students for urban service and leadership, and spearheads economic development and job training efforts in our Pittsburgh neighborhood.

Position:
The Visual Arts Teacher is responsible to teach visual arts to middle school and high school students who participate in The Pittsburgh Project’s Reach and Underground afterschool programs.  It is vitally important that this individual has strong communication, relational skills and is able to relate to and serve middle school and high school students.  It is also expected that the teacher will live his/her life in a way that is God-honoring both at and away from The Pittsburgh Project. 

Qualifications:

  • a commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ over life
  • a willingness and ability to articulate one’s Christian faith
  • a desire to help students grow academically, socially, and spiritually
  • experience teaching visual arts to urban middle school and/or high school-age students
  • creativity in planning lessons and activities
  • proficiency in math, reading, and writing
  • a teachable spirit
  • a commitment to working as part of a team with other staff members
  • problem solving skills

Responsibilities:

  • design and teach a visual arts class to 10-15 students
  • design and produce a visual arts show of students’ work
  • write lesson plans
  • build caring relationships with students
  • maintain a classroom environment that is safe, conducive to learning, and God-honoring
  • discipline students using age appropriate methods
  • model an intentional Christian faith
  • maintain accurate and neat classroom records
  • participate in regularly scheduled meetings and Youth Development training events
  • assist students in reaching the Youth Development team’s benchmarks and long-term outcomes

Schedule:
The Visual Arts Teacher will work Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45 PM until 6:15 PM.  The position begins August 25, 2008 and ends May 27, 2009.

Accountability:
The Visual Arts Teacher will work as part of The Pittsburgh Project’s Youth Development team and is supervised by Bruce Foster, the Middle School Coordinator.  Hourly rates for this position are between $8.50 and $10.50 an hour.
