About The Pittsburgh Project:
The Pittsburgh Project is a nonprofit community development organization with a 23-year track record of developing leaders and serving the city’s most vulnerable residents. Our year-round staff of 60 operates a progressive series of summer and afterschool programs for urban young people, deploys over 2500 people annually to perform free home repairs for Pittsburgh’s in-need elderly homeowners, outfits college students for urban service and leadership, and spearheads economic development and job training efforts in our Pittsburgh neighborhood.
Positions:
Reach Academy Teachers are responsible to build healthy, purposeful relationships with middle school students and to encourage students to grow academically, socially and spiritually. It is vitally important that these individuals possess strong communication and relational skills and are able to relate to and serve middle school students. It is also expected that teachers will live their lives in a way that is God-honoring both at and away from The Pittsburgh Project.
Qualifications:
- a solid grasp of the Bible, and a commitment to its final authority over faith and life
- a willingness and ability to articulate one’s Christian faith
- a desire to help students grow academically, socially, and spiritually
- experience leading a small group of urban middle school students
- proficiency in math, reading, and writing
- a commitment to mentoring urban middle school students
- a teachable spirit
- a commitment to working as part of a team with other staff members
- organizational skills and problem solving skills
- a valid driver’s license and must be at least 18 years old
Responsibilities:
- model an intentional Christian faith
- build caring relationships with students
- supervise a classroom of 15 students and nurture a sense of community within the class
- facilitate homework time
- supervise and provide feedback to volunteer tutors
- supervise and provide feedback to high school Leaders in Training
- construct and teach Bible study lessons for middle school students
- supervise students through program segments and assist the instructors as needed
- maintain an environment that is clean, safe, conducive to learning and God-honoring
- discipline students using age appropriate methods
- partner with parents/guardians in order to best serve the students
- maintain accurate and neat classroom records
- supervise students on field trips and special events
- assist with supervising students at dismissal until 6:30 PM twice a month
- attend occasional outreach events with students, special events at students’ schools and events to recruit students
- additional responsibilities as determined by the Middle School Coordinator
- assist students in reaching the Youth Development benchmarks and long-term outcomes
- participate in regularly scheduled meetings and Youth Development training events
- drive the van for pick up and drop off of program participants
Schedule:
Our schedule for the 2008-09 school year runs from Monday, August 25, 2008 through Friday, May
28,2009. Reach Academy Teachers work Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Friday, 3:00-6:15 PM;
Wednesday 12:00-6:15 PM and they attend a staff meeting every Tuesday from 2:003:00 PM. Hourly
rates for this position are between $8.50-$10.50 an hour.
Accountability:
Reach Academy Teachers work as part of The Pittsburgh Project’s Youth Development team and are supervised by Bruce Foster, the Middle School Coordinator.
