About The Pittsburgh Project:
The Pittsburgh Project is a nonprofit community development organization with a 23-year track record of developing leaders and serving the city’s most vulnerable residents. Our year-round staff of 60 operates a progressive series of summer and afterschool programs for urban young people, deploys over 2500 people annually to perform free home repairs for Pittsburgh’s in-need elderly homeowners, outfits college students for urban service and leadership, and spearheads economic development and job training efforts in our Pittsburgh neighborhood.
Position:
The B.A.S.I.C. Academy Floating Teacher is responsible for filling in for B.A.S.I.C. Academy teachers who are absent and for assisting in tasks to serve students in the B.A.S.I.C. Academy. It is important that this individual possesses strong communication and relational skills and is able to relate to and teach urban, elementary-age students. It is also expected that teachers will live their lives in a way that is God-honoring both at and away from The Pittsburgh Project.
Qualifications:
- a commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ over life
- a solid grasp of the Bible, and a commitment to its authority over faith and life
- a willingness and ability to articulate one’s Christian faith
- a desire to help children grow academically, socially, and spiritually
- experience teaching a small group of urban, elementary-age students
- proficiency in math, reading, and writing
- a teachable spirit
- enjoy working with elementary students
- a commitment to working as part of a team with other staff members
- organizational skills and problem solving skills
- a commitment to affirm the vision, mission, and goals of The Pittsburgh Project
- must be at least 18 years old
Responsibilities:
- model an intentional Christian faith
- substitute for B.A.S.I.C Academy teachers who are absent
- facilitate homework time
- assist the Elementary Coordinators with program and administrative tasks
- supervise and provide feedback to volunteer tutors
- supervise and provide feedback to high school Leaders in Training
- plan and teach Bible lessons using curriculum provided
- plan and lead reading and math activities using resources provided
- plan and lead recreational activities
- move with the students through program segments and assist instructors as needed
- maintain a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to learning
- maintain a neat and organized classroom
- discipline students using age appropriate methods
- partner with parents/guardians in order to best serve the students
- maintain accurate and neat classroom records
- supervise students on field trips and special events
- assist with supervising students at dismissal until 6:30 PM twice a month
- assist students in reaching the Youth Development long-term outcomes
- participate in regularly scheduled meetings and Youth Development training events
- participate in occasional Pittsburgh Project staff events
- additional responsibilities as determined by the Elementary Coordinator
Schedule:
Our schedule for 2008-09 runs from Monday, August 25, 2008 to Friday, May 29, 2009. B.A.S.I.C. Academy Teachers work Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Friday, 3:00-6:15 PM; Wednesday 12:00-6:15 PM and attend a bi-monthly staff meeting that will occur on Thursdays from 2-3 PM or 6:15-7:30 PM. Hourly rates for this position are between $8.50-$10.50 an hour.
Accountability:
The B.A.S.I.C. Academy Floating Teacher works as part of The Pittsburgh Project’s Youth Development team and is supervised by Karen Shumaker, Elementary Coordinator.
