Position Overview:
The Mattress Factory Museum of Art is an internationally known museum of contemporary art that exhibits room-sized installations created on site by artists from across the country and around the world.  The Museum is located on the historic North Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in creatively renovated and re-purposed buildings which house gallery spaces, offices and artist housing. The Museum houses a growing and distinctive permanent collection, featuring artists James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Winifred Lutz and Rolf Julius, and offers innovative exhibitions that change throughout the year.   Since 1977, the Mattress Factory has supported over 300 artists through its world-renowned residency program. Each year artists come to Pittsburgh to create new work at the Museum, where they are provided with uncommon curatorial support and on-site housing.  Their works are exhibited and promoted by the Museum, and they are provided with opportunities to interact with other artists and institutions, the general public and students who participate in the Museum’s education programs.
The Mattress Factory is seeking an experienced development professional to manage its corporate, foundation and government fundraising program.  The Museum’s annual budget of close to $ 2 million is supported by approximately  60% in grant revenue.  In addition, the Museum recently completed a major planning process, and is embarking on a multi-year fundraising effort to raise $ 3 million to support a variety of planned special program and capital expenditures.
The Mattress Factory’s culture is one of collaboration and team work.  The Manager of Corporate, Foundation and Government grants will work alongside a part time Grantwriter, a Manager of Individual Giving and Membership, a Marketing Manager, a part time assistant, and project consultants to develop strategies that achieve the Museum’s contributed income and sponsorship goals. S/he working closely with and reports to the Museum’s two Directors, who together oversee the Museum’s artistic programs and operations.   S/he has primary accountability for ensuring that grant opportunities are anticipated, identified and researched;  that funding approaches are developed in concert with the with Museum’s Directors and the development team, and that applications and reports are submitted in a timely fashion.  S/he helps to coordinate and support fundraising efforts of the Museum’s Board of Directors. Working with the Mattress Factory’s Assistant Director, s/he ensures accurate grant budgeting and tracking of grant expenditures.  S/he works with her colleagues to plan and implement cultivation and fundraising events, and interacts with artists, other staff, and volunteers to contribute to the creativity and success of the institution.  The successful candidate will have at least three years of professional grant seeking experience, excellent grant writing, organizational and interpersonal skills.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research local, national and international grant sources
  • With the Directors and the development team, develop approaches;  assist with meeting coordination and follow-up as necessary
  • Prepare briefing materials on funding sources and possible approaches for the Museum’s Directors, the Board of Directors and others involved in solicitations
  • Write grant applications and prepare related supplementary materials, prepare grant reports working with the organization’s part-time Grant writer to effectively manage workload and meet deadlines
  • Work with the Board’s Development Committee to devise fundraising strategies that make effective use of Board Members’ skills, connections and time
  • With the Museum’s directors and Board Members, represent the Mattress Factory at fundraising meetings
  • Monitor progress of applications through grant makers’ decision-making processes (from first inquiry through decision) and ensure that appropriate team members, Directors and Board Members are kept informed of progress
  • With development team, develop sponsorship materials and approaches;  assist with delivery to sponsor of sponsorship benefits
  • Ensure acknowledgment of gifts, involving the Directors and Board Members as appropriate
  • With the development team, plan and implement cultivation and fundraising events
  • Working with the Assistant Director, ensure accuracy of application budgets and grant re-budgets
  • With development team, prepare and present accurate internal fundraising reports that align with financial statements

Experience, Skills and Attributes:

  • Experience developing fundraising strategy, researching grant prospects and preparing grant application materials
  • Excellent grant writing skills, including the ability to create a compelling case for support
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong oral communication/speaking skills
  • A flexible, creative approach to work, and ability and enjoyment of working as a member of a team
  • Experience working with high level volunteers
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit arts (visual arts a plus)
  • Understanding of nonprofit finance and budgeting
  • Ability to multi-task and work under deadlines
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel;  Mac OS a plus.
