POSITION DESCRIPTION: Carnegie Museum of Art’s Heinz Architectural Center seeks a Curatorial Assistant to work collaboratively with the Curators of Architecture in developing exhibitions and managing, researching, interpreting, and exhibiting the collection. The Curatorial Assistant will facilitate all organizational aspects of the department’s three exhibitions per year, including acting as liaison with all non-curatorial departments in implementation of exhibitions and production of catalogues and other printed matter. S/he will assist in all matters related to the collection, which includes 5,000 accessioned drawings, models, photographs, and other architectural material; a small collection of rare books; a library of several thousand books and journals; and 140 unaccessioned plaster architectural casts. Carries out administrative tasks including financial tracking, event planning, and monitoring of the department’s physical space.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in architectural history, or in art history with substantial coursework in 19th-, 20th- and 21st-century architecture required. Advanced academic training and/or professional practice in architecture will be considered as an alternative. Experience in a museum or similar environment, knowledge of office practices, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills required. Experience in handling works on paper strongly preferred. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and the desire to work as part of a team imperative. Facility with all Microsoft Office programs and digital technology and capacity to learn computer technology related to architectural drawing and production critical. Must be willing and able to safely lift and carry large folders and boxes of drawings and objects up to thirty pounds. Excellent opportunity to learn about managing a department, in addition to acquiring museum skills.
