Organizational Overview
Oakland Planning and Development Corporation (OPDC) is a community-based organization in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood with a 30-year history of serving the community. OPDC builds a better Oakland through job placement services, neighborhood preservation and investment programs, resident volunteer efforts, and community engagement. OPDC connects people and organizations with diverse concerns and perspectives—to build an economically stronger, more culturally cohesive, more action-oriented, and more actively employed, engaged, and inclusive Oakland community—based on shared goals arrived at through open dialogue and direct action.
The Communications Manager will report directly to the Executive Director with the primary responsibility of keeping the community and stakeholders well-informed about OPDC’s programs and providing the opportunity for community/stakeholder input with our organization.
Position Responsibilities
- Manage OPDC’s brand and message -- continue existing, refine when needed, and ensure consistent application. Educate board members and staff about the OPDC brand and message.
- Identify messages that connect best with those OPDC seeks to reach and effectively disseminate them.
- Write, produce, and distribute an organizational newsletter. Produce other written materials describing OPDC’s work as assigned.
- Maximize OPDC’s visibility on social media sites; develop social media strategies and relevant online conversation topics.
- Serve as primary administrator and moderator of OPDC’s website and interactive media.
- Use program outcomes to write compelling stories for newsletter copy, proposals, fundraising appeals, website, etc.
- Collaborate with fellow staff to plan ahead to capture events and program accomplishments on film, video, interviews, etc.
- Assist Executive Director to synthesize program activity into outcome metrics to measure OPDC’s social change impact. Interview/survey clients and community members to generate impact data as well.
- Develop presentations -- audio/visual, presentation boards, maps, etc.
- Manage communications strategies for the Oakland 2011 community planning process.
- Work with program staff to develop the most effective collateral for their use; manage the production and implementation of this material.
- Represent OPDC to the media and general public. Maintain media contacts.
Position Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal skills, especially with regard to teamwork.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and achieve results in a timely fashion.
- Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and independent worker.
- Mastery of the written word. Ability to synthesize complicated program information and quickly write pithy, engaging copy for multiple audiences.
- Commitment to community development and public service.
- Tangible experience creating and/or managing a brand identity.
- Team player; open to nonprofit environment where each staff member may be called upon to do unglamorous work or fill in for another person on occasion.
- Willing to work a flexible schedule – occasional evening/weekend events as needed.
- Website management experience preferred, especially Wordpress.
- Experience in synthesizing program metrics to tell a compelling story.
- Demonstrated experience using social media tools; knowledge of changing social media trends.
Compensation
OPDC offers a generous benefits package; salary for this position is dependent upon experience and will be consistent with similar positions in the nonprofit sector.
