Posted: 7/1/10

Organization Overview
City Year’s mission is to unite young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors, and role models, these young leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform urban schools and neighborhoods in Cleveland and across the United States. Founded in Boston in 1988, City Year is a member of AmeriCorps and now serves in 19 communities across the country. City Year Cleveland was founded in 1996 as a legacy of the city’s bicentennial celebration. Each year, 50 corps members serve in five Cleveland public schools as reading and math tutors, role models, mentors, and leaders of after school programs. In addition, corps members conduct a variety of physical service projects (including park and playground cleanups, school and community center painting, and neighborhood beautification); participate in a range of community engagements at shelters, group homes, and senior citizen residences; prepare their own career or continuing education development plan; and build their own civic awareness and leadership skills that will position them to become active citizens throughout their lives.

Program Overview
Cleveland’s Schools Team follows the national program “Whole School, Whole Child” model. Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) is City Year’s school-based service strategy to improve the conditions supporting student success in schools and increase the numbers of students progressing to the next level. The three main components of WSWC are:

  • Academic Support - Developing the skills that correlate with success and active learning in schools. Creating competence, self-confidence, and meaningful connection with a caring adult at school
  • Positive School Climate – Supporting an environment in which students want to engage in learning, are excited and connected to a diverse and peaceful peer network. Can identify and participate in service to explore and address needs in their own school communities
  • After-school Programming - Reinforcing key learning and developmental milestones that support feelings of learning efficacy such as positive peer relationships, school -family connections, positive role modeling, and 21st century skill acquisition
